 What does “Ramadan” mean?

What does “Ramadan” mean? Why is the holy month of Muslims, Ramadan, called so?

Answer:

Ramadan is “the Sultan of the Months”

“Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). Henceforth, anyone of you reaching that month should fast in it.”(Al Bakara 185)
Ramadan, the 9th month of Islamic calendar, is the most important and holy month for Muslims. The first verses of Holy Quran were revealed in this month. Allah (swt) wants Muslims to spend this month fasting and as stated in the hadiths, gives more awards for the worships and favors in this month. Scholars say that it is such an abundant and generous month that can make a Muslim, who appreciate it and spend it with worship, gain an award of 80 years’ award.

  Ramadan means “to burn”

Ramadan, the name of the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, is an Arabic word that derives from the infinitive “ramda”. “Ramad” is getting hot because of the intensive heat and the ground that got hot in such way is called “ramda”. So Ramadan denotes “to burn”, “to burn due to walking bare foot on a scorched ground”.
The reason why this holy month is called “Ramadan” is because of its burning the sins. In Ramadan, fasting man endures heat because of hunger and thirst and the heat of fasting burns the sins.

  Ramadan means “rain”

Ramadan derives from the infinitive “Ramadiyu” which means the “rain” that is seen at the end of the summer, at the beginning of the autumn and cleans the earth from dust. Like this rain’s washing the earth surface, the holy month Ramadan washes the people of belief from sins and cleans their hearts. (Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır)

It is narrated that Ramadan is one of the “Beatiful Names of Allah (swt)”

Anas Bin Malik narrated from the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that “Don’t call (this holy month) just “Ramadan”. Such as Allah (swt) called “shahr-i Ramadan” (the month of Ramadan), you also call so. (Bukhari)

Scholars say that “Ramadan” is one of the names of Allah (swt). So the holy month must be called as “Shahr-i Ramadan” (the month of Ramadan) Kaynak: http://askaquestionto.us - What does “Ramadan” mean?
