How Did Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) Pass the Eids?
What did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) do on eid days? How was he spending those days?
Answer:
Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) said Takbir(1) and Tahlil(2) during the eids
“Adorn the eids (the Eid-ul Fıtr and the Eid-ul Adha) with La ilaha illa allah, Allahu Akbar, Al-hamdu lillah, Subhana allah.” (Ebu Nuaym)
Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) describes eids as the days of eating, drinking, praising Allah (swt). He (pbuh) passes both eids in this way. And he (pbuh) advises his community (ummah) to do the same.
“Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) paid special attention to indicating eids’ religious angle in order to prevent exaggerated entertainment and acts of joy that is beyond the permissible limits.” (Kutub-i Sitta)
“There are among the narrations many that strongly encourage thanks and remembrance of God at festival times in order to prevent heedlessness from prevailing and deviation into the illicit. Then at such times this may transform the bounties of joy and happiness into thanks (shukr) and make the bounty continue and increase it. For thanks increase bounty and dispel heedlessness.” (Badiuzzaman Said Nursi- from the Risala-i Nur Collection/The Flashes)
Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) ate dates on the morning of eids
Rasul-i Akram (pbuh) who used to break His fast with something sweet used eat dessert (date) and go to the eid prayer in Ramadan.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
“Allah's Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates.” (Bukhari, Book 2, Volume 15, Hadith 73)
Narrators explain the reasons for the Rasulullah (pbuh) not proceeding to the prayer unless he had eaten something as follows: “So that no one thought that the fast continued until after the prayer.” (Kutub-i Sitta)
The Reason, he ate odd number of dates is to emphasize oneness of Allah. Rasulullah (pbuh) did everything possible to be blessed (barakah) with odd numbers. “Allah is one (this is an odd number). And He loves odd numbers. (Muslim, Book 35, Hadith 6475)
Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) went to the eid prayer on foot
Hadrat Ali (ra) said: “It is sunnah to go to eid prayer on foot and to eat something before you leave.” (Tirmizi)
Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) preferred different routes on his way to and from the eid prayer
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
“On the Day of 'Id the Prophet used to return (after offering the 'Id prayer) through a way different from that by which he went.” (Bukhari, Book 2, Volume 15, Hadith 102)
This hadith indicates that going to and coming from the eid prayer by different routes is considered good behavior.
