Is Euthanasia Permissible?
Is euthanasia permissible? Is euthanasia considered suicide? Do people committing suicide go to hell?
For the one who is ill and feels pain, the act of ending his life intentionally is suicide. Due to a serious illness or intolerable aches and pain, a person’s ending his/her own life or ending that person’s life with his permission means that he/she has clearly chosen suicide. Today, this event is called euthanasia.
The dictionary meaning of euthanasia is good death, beautiful death, easy and comfortable death.
As a terminology euthanasia means:The putting to death, by painless method of a terminally-ill or severely debilitated person at their request or with their consent.
Euthanasia is two parts:
a) Active Euthanasia is commmission of an act to end a terminally-ill patient’s life with his/her consent or at his request such as administering a lethal injection.
b) Passsive Euthanasia is the omission of an act to save or treat a terminally-ill or suffering person’s life.
Euthanasia is a type of suicide an suicide is definitely forbidden by our religion
A person does not have the right to take his own life. It is not even considered an appropriate act to ask for death from Allah leave alone suicide.
Narrated Abu Huraira, Rasulullah (pbuh) said: “...So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah." (Bukhari, Book 7, Volume 70, Hadith 577)
Active euthanasia is the same as suicide and the person who ends his life with this method is committing a sin and whoever approves of act carries out this method is also responsible and is committing a sin. (Ministry of Religious Affairs)
Our religion forbids suicide and calls it a sin
O you believe! Do not eat up your property among yourselves in wrongful means (forbidden ways) except for a trade that you mutually have agreed nor kill yourselves (and each others). No doubt that Allah is Abundantly Merciful unto you. (An-Nisa, 29)
Our religion forbids suicide and calls it a sin (haram). Nothing can make this sin permissible. (Kutub-i Sitta)
Narrated Abu Huraira, The Prophet said: "He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." (Bukhari, Book 2, Volume 23, Hadith 446)
Explanation: What we can understand from this hadith is that people who commit suicide one way or another will stay in hell eternally.
Scholars of Ahl-i Sunnah accept it as an important fact that believers in the oneness of Allah apart from being subjected to torture will not stay in hell eternally.
There are certain narrations that confirm this subject. Scholars of Ahl-i Sunnah consider this hadith applicable to people who think suicide is halal (permissible) in our religion. So: “Whoever thinks suicide is permissible and commits suicide is sent to hell for eternity. Because; with this belief, this person turns haram into halal. And turning halal into haram is not considered permissible.
It is also said that: “The true punishment is this but to honor the imans’ of the believers in the oneness of Allah, Allah will take them out of hell fire. He won’t leave them in hell for eternity.”
Some scholars say that “if Allah wishes they will stay in hell fire forever.”
Some scholars say that “eternity” is used to describe “a long time” so the meaning of the hadith can be understood as will be in hell for a long time.
“The punishment is according to the action” in accordance with this rule the person who commits suicide is punished in the same way that he takes his life. If he takes a poison, he will always take poison. If he jumps from a mountain, he will always be thrown from mountain, if he stabs himself with an iron substance such as knife, dagger etc. he will be tortured by being stabbed with that thing continuously.
