 Is Plastic Surgery Permissible?

"Satan said: ...."I will order them to change the nature created by Allah."... (Surat-u Nisa, 119)

Answer:

Plastic surgery can be classified in two categories. The ruling of the plastic surgery depends on its category.

First kind

is the plastic surgery which is carried out for an

essentiality

like removing a defect for the purpose of treatment.
For example to have a tooth out or trim a tooth which is curved or distorted and therefore hurts and inflicts pain. Or removing a sixth finger that a person has inborn. Or a plastic surgery for a damaged organ in an accident.
This kind of surgery is permissible in Islam since it is a “

genuine need

”. This kind is not changing the nature created by Allah (swt), on the contrary, it is removing some defects which change the natural creation.
We also see an example of this kind of surgery in the time of Our Prophet (pbuh).
Imam Abu Dawud, Imam Nasa’i and Imam Tirmizi (ra) relate in their respective Sunan collections, that a Companion by the name of Arfajah ibn Aswad (ra) had his nose damaged in the battle of kulab. He replaced it first with silver, and then with a nose made of gold, with the order and consent of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh).

The second kind

of surgery is the one that is carried out for

beautification

. This kind is removing the defects to attain beauty and increase attractiveness. This kind of surgery is not for an essential need; rather the purpose is to change the natural creation for people’s whims and desires. Scholars agree that this kind of plastic surgery is haraam (forbidden in Islam), because the ayah says that:
“Allah cursed him. And he [Shaytaan (Satan)] said: "I will take an appointed portion of your slaves;
“Verily, I will mislead them, and surely, I will arouse in them false desires; and certainly, I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allah." And whoever takes Shaytaan (Satan) as a Protector instead of Allah, has surely suffered a manifest loss."
(Surat-u Nisa- 118, 119)
Besides, in a Hadith it is stated that: “Allah’s curse is on those women who practice tattooing and get themselves tattooed, and those who remove hair from their faces, and those who make space between their teeth artificially to beautify themselves. They are such that they change the nature and features created by Allah.” [Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]
Since our bodies are given to us as trusts, we do not have the right to change it for our carnal desires. If we do so, we’ll be committing the sin of changing the natural creation. As a matter of fact, Allah (swt) has given everyone the best that they can have. There is no doubt that He knows the best.
Another point for this issue is spending money just for carnal desires is “

wasting

”. If there is nothing wrong with your health, but you go under a plastic surgery, you are just wasting your time, your money and even your health. While there are so many people in the world who die of illness because of not having enough money for surgery, Islam that has the principle” He is no believer who sleeps full while his neighbor beside him is hungry. (Tabarânî)” does definitely not approve such an unnecessary consumption.

In conclusion

, all types of plastic surgery are not forbidden. If it is because of an essentiality like a treatment, it is permissible. However, if it is just for the purpose of beauty, it is definitely forbidden in Islam because of the reasons mentioned above. Kaynak: http://askaquestionto.us - Is Plastic Surgery Permissible?
