Is Allah of light?
Is it wrong to say that "Allah is of light."?
Answer:
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His Light is as (if there were) a niche and within it a lamp, the lamp is in glass, the glass as it were a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, its oil would almost glow forth (of itself), though no fire touched it. Light upon Light! Allah guides to His Light whom He wills. And Allah sets forth parables for humankind, and Allah is All-Knower of everything.” (Surah Nur, 35)
With respect to the aforesaid ayah, “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth”. And one of His 99 Beatiful Names is “An-Nur”. However, “His Light” is unique and doesn’t resemble to any other light -the light we see in this world-.
Since Allah is the Creator and the only Lord, He doesn’t resemble any of His creatures; In the manner that a table doesn’t resemble a carpenter who products it, Allah, the Creator, doesn’t resemble any creatures. He is free from matter. It is imposible for our minds to comprehend the form of Allah (swt). Because there is nothing in this world resembling Him.
As stated in the following hadith, Allah (swt) created the angels from light.
"Angels were created from light, Jinn were created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from that which has been described to you (in the Qur’an and Sunnah)..." (Muslim)
So it isn’t a correct expression to say that “Allah is of light.”
If somebody is talking about an object which we don’t know and have never seen, we try to understand it by asking questions like “How is it? What is it like?” Because there are two ways for humans to comprehend such objects; one is to try to comprehend it by the help of some similar objects to it. The other way is to try to understand it by the help of objects carrying opposite properties to it. But Allah (swt) is free from having similarities and opposites.
