What are the pillars of fasting?

what are the pillars of fasting according to four schools of thought?

Answer:

According to the Hanafi and Hanbali schools of thought the only pillar of fasting is abstaining from the things that break fast.

According to Maliki madhab, there are two different opinions. Some scholars regard intention and imsaq the two pillars of fasting.

However some other Maliki scholars say that intention is just condition of fast, not a pillar. So the only pillar of fast is imsaq; in other words abstaining from the things that break the fast.

According to the Shafis pillars of fasting are three:

1. Intention

2. The person who fasts

3. Abstinence from the things which break fast.

According to the Shafis, these are the three pillars of fasting. On the other hand, according to Hanafis and Hanbalis, "the one who fasts" and "intention" are not pillars but two conditions of fasting. Although they are outside the fasting, they are necessary for fasting.
