 Is It Permissible to Give Zakat-al Fitr to a Non-Muslim?

Is it obligatory to give zakat-al fitr to poor Muslims?

Answer:

According to Imam Abu Yusuf (ra) and Imam Shafi (ra), it is not permissible to give zakat-al fitr to poor Dhimmis (non-Muslims); because the purpose of giving zakat-al fitr is to make the poor Muslims happy on Eid day by satisfying their needs. This purpose cannot be achieved by giving zakat-al fitr to Dhimmis.

Besides; the scholars who find it permissible to give zakat-al fitr to Dhimmis take the view that;

The main purpose of this charity is to satisfy the needs of the poor by means of an intention of worship and this purpose can also be obtained by giving sadaqa to poor non-Muslims.
