 Does Soul Leave the Body During Sleep?

While the soul is in the body, the body is alive, when it leaves the body it dies. Since the soul leaves the body during the sleep, does man have two souls?

Answer:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatada;
My father said, "One night we were traveling with the Prophet and some people said, 'We wish that Allah's Apostle would take a rest along with us during the last hours of the night.' He said, 'I am afraid that you will sleep and miss the (Fajr) prayer.' Bilal said, 'I will make you get up.' So all slept and Bilal rested his back against his Rahila and he too was overwhelmed (by sleep) and slept. The Prophet got up when the edge of the sun had risen and said, 'O Bilal! What about your statement?' He replied, 'I have never slept such a sleep.' The Prophet said, 'Allah captured your souls when He wished, and released them when He wished. O Bilal! Get up and pronounce the Adhan for the prayer.' The Prophet performed ablution and when the sun came up and became bright, he stood up and prayed." (Bukhari, Book 1, Volume 10, Hadith 569)
Yahya related to me from Malik that Zayd ibn Aslam said;
The Messenger of Allah said, “O people! Allah seized our spirits (arwah) and if He had wished He would have returned them to us at a time other than this.”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned to Abu Bakr and said, 'Shaytan came to Bilal when he was standing in prayer and made him lie down and lulled him to sleep like a small boy.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then called Bilal and told him the same as he had told Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr declared, 'I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.' "

(Malik, Book 1, Hadith 1.6.26)
İzzu'bnu Abdi's-Salam explains the capture and the return of the soul by Allah’s wish mentioned in the hadith with these words:
“There are two souls in every body. One is ruh’ul yakaza, which keep a person awake when it is in the body and when a person sleeps this soul leaves the body and dreams. The second one is ruh’ul hayat according to divine law when the soul is in the body the body is alive and as it leaves the body the body dies, when it comes back to the body the body revives.
Both these souls are in the body. Only the people who are enabled by Allah can know the exact places of these souls. They are like two embryos found together in the mother’s womb.
The scholar continues his explanations with proofs from the Quran: “It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.” (Az-Zumar, 42)
Commentary of this ayah (verse) is as follows:
Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death means that Allah keeps the souls that do not cause death during sleep and whose death He has decreed He keeps their souls and does not send it back to the body. He sends the other souls (the souls of yakaza) back to the body until the end of their appointed term. This appointed term is the time of death. When death arrives it keeps both yakaza and hayat souls together and does not send them back to the body which causes the body to die.
