Do We Need Sunnah?
As we can learn everything from the Qur'an, is there need for the Sunnah of the Prophet?
Answer:
Just as we can learn everything from the Qur’an, we learn the necessity of following Our Master Prophet (pbuh) from the Qur’an.
The Qur’an commands to follow the sunnah
“(Oh Beloved Muhammad) Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Al-i Imran: 31)
The scholars have stated that obeying Allah means obeying the Qur’an, hence obeying his Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) means following his Sunnah. It is understood clearly from the verse that one gains the love of Allah through following his Sunnah.
Sunnah expounds the Qur’an
“We have sent down unto thee (also) the Message; that thou mayest explain clearly to men what is sent for them (halal and haram), and that they may give thought.” (Nahl: 44)
“Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire! It is no less than inspiration sent down to him.” (Najm: 3-4)
It is not possible to understand The Qur’an fully without sunnah (the actions that the Prophet Muhammad practised). Our Prophet (pbuh) was responsible for conveying the Qur’an as well as explaining It.
For instance, salat is a command in the Qur’an but it is not explained in details when and in how many rakahs to perform it. Zakah is commanded, however; among what is zakah taken from and how much zakah is paid is not explained. The details of the commands such as salat and zakah and many more were explained by our Prophet.
"Know that indeed, I have been given the Book and, with it, that which is similar to it (the Sunnah)." (Ahmad, Abu Dawud Vol: 4, P: 200, Sahih ul-Jaami, Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba, Vol. 1, P: 488)
Abandoning the Sunnah causes bidat/innovation
“He who turns away from my sunnah is not from me.” al-Bukhari (English Translation: 7/1-2/no:1), Muslim (English Translation 2/703/no:3236).
“The loss of religion begins with abandonment of sunnah. Just as a rope breaks fibre by fibre, so does faith vanish with abandoning the principles of Sunnah one by one.” (Sunan al-Darimi)
It is impossible to understand and practise Islam without sunnah; in a similar way if sunnah-i sanniye is abandoned a huge gap will appear and that will be replaced by bidahs which is exactly opposite of sunnah and principles of Islam. In fact Our Master Prophet let us know this:
"Know that the time when a hadith of mine reaches one while sitting in his comfortable armchair and says “Between you and us is the book of Allah. We consider those as halal which have been stated as halal in It.” is close. Know that those rendered halal by The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is just like those rendered as haram by Allah."
